Nanaimo Record Show

is back for its eighth year

The Nanaimo Record Show returns to the Bowen Park Auditorium April 21, this year featuring more than 43 eight-foot tables or more than 500 feet of records.

As records continue their meteoric rebirth this event is in high demand. The record show sold out vendor tables in record time, a testament to the joy that dealers and customers get from the once-maligned medium. As people have fallen in love with records for the first time or rekindled their relationship, we see continued growth worldwide and locally.

In downtown Nanaimo alone there are at least five places to find LPs (Fascinating Rhythm, Sound Heritage, Wyrd Wealth, London Drugs and Noise Agony Mayhem). Noise Agony Mayhem joined the mix in late 2023 and was started by Nanaimo Record Show founder Dave Read. It’s a specialized store focusing on metal and punk rock. Having a specialty store of this nature is a real barometer to the health of vinyl records.

This year’s show has attracted more vendors from the mainland than ever before.

“It’s exciting for us to see folks from the mainland want to come here. It’s a recognized show across the province.” says organizer Jack Tieleman. “In addition to those selling the event brings people from across the island. It’s a great way to showcase our city is so great. A little economic driver.”

This year offers something for everyone interested in vinyl and beyond. The vendors' scope is wide from rare and hard to find records and imports to bargains and gently loved deals.  It’s not unusual for vendors to bring memorabilia or gear there. Turntables anyone?

Last year the selection was as diverse as you could imagine from rare Japanese psychedelic records to hip hop 12” singles to favoured Led Zeppelin LPs. It’s curious to think about the history of these records and how they ended up here. All have a tale to tell, some more interesting than others. Whether they came from a famous musician, survived your older brother’s parties or were found in a storage locker, it all adds to the richness of collecting.

The show is April 21 at the Bowen Park Auditorium, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2, kids under 12 free. The JLA food truck is back offering fine Caribbean cuisine.
