The government of Canada can't read our Charter of Rights
No wonderpeople are confused! Boy, oh, boy, (just a figure of speech not gender prejudice) look what I just came across. It’s amazing.
I went to the Government of Canada website to see what they said about our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. No doubt this government website would have involved lawyers, constitutional experts – you would think – like people who can read, read the words as written.
Well, not so fast, here is what they say about Section 1 of the Charter:
“Section 1 of the Charter says that Charter rights can be limited by law so long as those limits can be shown to be reasonable in a free and democratic society.”
Read it again: “Section 1 of the Charter says that Charter rights can be limited by law so long as those limits can be shown to be reasonable in a free and democratic society.”
Now read Section 1 as it is written in the Charter itself:
“1 The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”
Read it again : “1 The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.’
What’s left out of the Government’s wording? Oh! “As can be demonstrably justified.”
The key phrase has been left out by the federal government. And happened to “guarantees the rights and freedoms” phrase?
The government has twisted and mangled the wording and hence the meaning of section 1 of the Charter. So, this is why all governments in Canada think they are home free with their mandates and lockdown and other authoritarian measures?
Now, all the more reason why government mandates and all other authoritarian pandemic measures must be testing in court against what the Charter actually says. Not what the government mangled it to say.

It's easy for politicians, they can spend what they want because somebody else will pay for it – the taxpayers.
Well done Merv & Marg
Nanaimo is still a good place, but the powers that be have let it run to ruin. This is sad to see.
i agree it is the volunteers in Nanaimo that make it such a wonderful place to live. I've lived all over B. C. and came back to Nanaimo to raise my kids and join the family business. Never any regret
Thank you Mr. Peckford for voicing concerns that many Canadians share, but remain silent.
